A masking set for painting the road wheels of the T-34/85 medium tank in 1:35 scale. This is not a kit: the masks stick onto finished wheels and separate the rubber tire band from the rim while spraying. The set is cut for the T-34/85 kit from Zvezda; separate sets are cut for T-34/85 kits from other manufacturers, so when choosing, keep an eye on whose model you are buying for.
The T-34 rides on springing derived from the Christie system, and that determines the whole look of the running gear: five large road wheels on each side, a markedly larger gap between the first and the second wheel than between the rest, and no return rollers — the upper run of the track bears directly on the wheels. The discs are large, so their rubber tire band forms a genuinely long curve on the model and every departure from a circle shows. The drive sprocket on the T-34 is at the rear and has the characteristic roller teeth; the idler wheel is at the front. One more thing deserves attention, which kits handle differently: during the war both wheels with a full rubber tire band and all-steel or internally sprung wheels were produced, on which the circumference is not painted as rubber at all. Before you start masking, look at which type of wheel your kit contains.
The large diameter of a T-34 wheel is the ideal opportunity to break the myth of a single thick coat. Thin the paint markedly and spray at a lower pressure than you use on the surfaces of the hull. High pressure drives paint under the edge of the mask, and on a circumference as long as the tire band of a T-34 that shows along its whole length, not just in one place. Two or three transparent coats give a deeper and more natural tone than one covering coat, and the edge stays clean. Choose a dark gray shade, tune it with a drop of brown and leave it matte. Apply any filter or dust only once the masks are off, because under a mask they would settle on its edge.
