A modeling accessory for painting, not a kit. The templates mark out the rubber tire band of the road wheel, so a sharp transition is created with no lining by hand. The set is cut for the Takom kits and covers the family of American heavy prototypes that share a common chassis.
These machines were created as heavy tanks with a long hull, and that left its mark on the running gear in two ways. First, there are considerably more road wheels per side than on an ordinary medium tank, so the total of tire bands on one model is among the highest you will meet in 1:35 scale. Second, the running gear is densely occupied — the wheels are close together and are supplemented by return rollers carrying the upper run of the track. That creates a situation which complicates painting by hand markedly: there is little room between neighboring wheels for a brush to get in comfortably, and yet every gap is visible. The fact that one set covers several types from this development family also confirms that the running gear did not differ fundamentally between them — the differences were in the armament and the turret.
The more wheels, the faster a template repays itself, and here the return is the fastest in the whole category. Lining that many tire bands by hand is work for several sessions and fatigue tells on the last wheels — the end tends to be worse than the beginning. Spraying over a template has the advantage that the first wheel and the last look the same. The set is essentially unnecessary only when you plan to fill the running gear entirely with mud or are building the model as a backdrop piece in a diorama. And thirdly, consider that if you are building more than one machine from this family, one item deals with both.
