About product

M108 — the American 105 mm self-propelled howitzer in 1:35 scale (AFV Club)

A plastic kit of the tracked self-propelled artillery vehicle M108 in 1:35 scale from the maker AFV Club. The model represents the complete vehicle with hull, running gear and a rotating turret carrying a howitzer of 105 mm caliber. It is supplied unassembled and unpainted.

The real subject

The M108 came about as the lighter sibling of the better-known M109: both vehicles were built on a common tracked chassis with a light aluminum hull, but they differed in caliber and in turret. The M108 carried a 105 mm howitzer, which gave it a higher rate of fire and a lower shell weight, while the heavier 155 mm version offered a greater effect on the target. That is exactly why production of the M108 stayed fairly short and a number of vehicles were later rebuilt into the more powerful variant. The M108 appeared in service in the 1960s and some of the vehicles reached further operators outside the United States as well. For modelers it is an interesting type: it has a clearly legible silhouette with a wide flat turret and yet it appears in a display case far less often than its more widespread relative.

Building and painting tips

Start with the running gear. Seat the wheels and the tracks so that the vehicle stands level on all its bearing points — check that on glass before the glue dries. Let the tracks sag slightly between the return rollers; with this type of chassis that improves the impression of the finished model markedly. Paint the turret and the hull separately while you can reach their inner edges with a brush. On a uniform olive finish, modulation pays off: spray the middle of the large areas a shade lighter and leave the edges darker. Build the patina from the bottom up — first dust and mud on the chassis and the lower hull, then finer dirt on the sides and finally isolated worn edges. Prepare a glossy surface for the decals and once it is dry seal the whole model with matte clear; only then apply dry pigments.

Who the model is for

  • builders of American postwar tracked equipment in 1:35 scale
  • modelers looking for a less usual type they will not often meet at shows
  • anyone interested in artillery and in building dioramas with a firing position
  • modelers with basic experience of building tracked vehicles

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Both vehicles come out of a common tracked chassis and differ in caliber and in turret. The M108 carries a 105 mm howitzer, the heavier variant a 155 mm caliber with a greater effect on the target.

With basic experience of building tracked vehicles, yes. The most important thing is to seat the running gear so that the vehicle stands level on all its bearing points.

Paints and glue are not included. The exact contents of the package, including the form of the tracks, are given in the instructions and in the illustration on the box.

First a glossy surface and the decals, after drying matte clear over the whole model, and only at the end dry pigments and dust.
