An American insulated food container from the period of the Vietnam war in 1:35 scale, three pieces in the set. An accessory for a scene with supply, a base or a patrol at rest.
Responsibility details are not available.
Hot food was one of the few things that lifted an American soldier's mood in the damp tropical climate. It was therefore carried to fire bases and forward posts in insulated containers that kept the contents hot for the whole journey by helicopter and through the last few meters carried on foot. The set captures exactly such a container, and in three pieces at that.
Three pieces are more important for building a scene than it seems. A single object looks like a thing left behind by chance, three already create action: a little group at the handing out of portions, a load set down at the edge of a landing area or a heap ready to be taken away. In a smaller scene they can also be split between several places and thereby join the individual groups of figures.
Painting is quick. After washing and drying comes a dark base, then an olive tone matching the American equipment of the time. The metal catches and handles are pulled out with a dark graphite shade, the scuffs are suggested with the tip of a brush and the bottom is dusted with a light pigment according to the terrain the container stands on. A light sheen on the lid will hint that it has just been handled.
The resulting detail is small, but it moves the scene at once from a static display of vehicles to a moment from the everyday life of a unit.
For credibility it also helps to think about weight. A full container is carried with both hands and forces a figure to lean back, an empty one is set down on its side or leaned against the flank of a vehicle. When a figure in a matching stance is worked into the scene, a small object suddenly sets the whole composition and it is clear to the viewer what is going on.
An arrangement in a triangle tends to be more readable than a straight row.
