A detailing set in photo-etched metal in 1:35 scale for a model of the American M1114 HUMVEE armored utility vehicle fitted with interim add-on armor. The set replaces the plastic rendering where its thickness shows most: on the add-on plates, the grilles, the hinges, the brackets and the small external equipment. It is not a kit of the vehicle; it is an accessory that is fitted to a model already built or under construction.
The HUMVEE is an American light utility vehicle which took hold in the army as a universal carrier of everything from signals equipment to weapon stations. The M1114 version is the factory armored variant with strengthened crew protection. The interim add-on armor, which appeared in response to combat experience in an environment with a high risk of improvised explosive devices, consisted of armor plates and covers fitted after the fact, often visibly improvised-looking assemblies that give the vehicle its characteristic angular look. It is precisely these additions that are the most interesting from a modeling point of view and that benefit most from a metal rendering.
The add-on armor plates are flat by their nature and must not be bowed, so separate them with a scalpel and straighten them on glass. Make the bends in a bending tool. Degrease the metal with alcohol and glue it with cyanoacrylate glue, and on large areas with epoxy. A base coat for metal is essential. When painting, it pays to suggest that the add-on armor was fitted later: it may have a slightly different shade or more scuffed edges than the original body. Dusty lower areas, worn edges of the doors and the marks of boots on the step surfaces do more on this type of vehicle than any complicated weathering.
