About product

The wood that held a trench together

A dug ditch lasts weeks in dry clay, but hours in sand or in soaked soil. That is why the walls of trenches were revetted with boards, round timber and wicker hurdles braced against driven stakes. On the Western Front, where in Flanders the water table reached almost to the surface, raised breastworks were built as well and the floor was laid on duckboards. On the eastern battlefields, with deeper and firmer soil, sparser revetment was enough and more raw round timber was used than planed lumber.

What is in the box

The set brings four cast parts prepared as finished sections of revetted wall. The texture of the wood is cast including the growth rings and the bruised edges, so the grain comes out by itself after a dry brush.

Painting and aging

Fresh lumber is pale yellow, after a month in the damp it goes gray, on the bottom thirty centimeters it darkens from mud and moss clings in the corners. It is precisely the transition between the gray upper part and the dirty foot that makes the revetment credible. Nail heads and wire ties can be suggested with a dark dot.

The dimensions match the 1:35 ratio, in which figures stand in a trench with their shoulder to the edge of the wall.

Where to use the revetment

It does not belong only in a fighting ditch. The same structure holds the wall of a dug shelter, the lining of an artillery position, an air raid trench in a yard and the side of a road cut through a slope, so more than a single scene comes out of four parts.

It pays to leave irregular gaps between the boards and to set one out of line. A perfectly aligned wall gives the mold away, a crooked one is faithful, because the revetting was done with whatever was at hand.

FAQ

Four cast parts, each one representing a section of revetted wall.

An unreinforced wall slid down in wet or sandy soil. Boards and round timber braced against stakes held it in place.

Yes. In flooded Flanders raised breastworks and duckboards were built as well, while in the east, with firmer soil, more raw round timber was used.

A light base, a gray glaze coat and a dry brush along the edges. Darken the lower part of the wall with mud.
