About product

The Japanese heavy cruiser Chikuma in 1:350 (Tamiya)

An injection-molded plastic kit of the Japanese heavy cruiser Chikuma of the Tone class in 1:350 from the manufacturer Tamiya. The model, roughly 58 cm long, captures the characteristic arrangement of this ship. The package includes photo-etched parts (for example trolleys for the floatplanes, the rails of the catapults and mast struts) and metal elements for the anchor chains and the propeller shafts. The hull can be built whole on the stand supplied or in the waterline version. The kit is supplied unassembled and unpainted.

The real subject

Chikuma was completed in 1939 as the second ship of the Tone class and was among the last Japanese heavy cruisers. Her particularity was the concentration of all four twin turrets of the 20.3 cm main caliber ahead of the bridge, which freed the stern for launching floatplanes. These gave the force valuable reconnaissance, and Chikuma therefore often escorted Japanese aircraft carriers. She was present at the attack on Pearl Harbor and at the battle of Midway, and was sunk in the battle of Leyte Gulf in October 1944. The model captures the ship in her early war form.

Building and painting tips

Glue the plastic parts with a thin cement for plastic and the photo-etched elements with cyanoacrylate glue. Clean the fine superstructures, catapults and masts of flash, so that they stay sharp. Spray the hull and the decks with an airbrush over a primer; shades of gray suit Japanese wartime finishes and the deck surfaces can be set apart with a darker tone. Prepare the after deck with the floatplanes and the catapults carefully, because it is the most interesting to look at. The details are brought to life by a dark wash running into the recesses and by fine dry brushing of the edges; the railings can be supplemented with further photo-etched sets.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of large ship models in 1:350
  • Those interested in the Imperial Japanese Navy and in heavy cruisers of the Second World War
  • Modelers who will appreciate the photo-etched and metal parts enclosed for greater detail
  • A display case, as a full hull or a waterline model on the stand

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

She had all four twin turrets of the main caliber concentrated ahead of the bridge, in order to free the stern for launching floatplanes. These served for long-range reconnaissance on behalf of the force.

Yes. The hull can be assembled whole on the stand supplied, or in the simplified waterline form showing the ship on the surface.
