An adhesive wooden deck in 1:350 scale intended for a model of the Japanese aircraft carrier Shokaku. According to the name of the item, a name plate for the ship is part of the package as well. It is a detailing accessory for a plastic kit, not the model itself: you will not find the basic kit, paints or glue in the package.
The flight deck of Japanese aircraft carriers was planked and in 1:350 scale it forms the largest continuous visible area of the whole model. It is precisely there that the level of the build shows: an uneven spray or too coarsely accentuated joints spoil the impression of an otherwise well built hull. The veneer brings the real grain of wood, a natural tone and the fine departures between planks that are only awkward to imitate with an airbrush. With this type of accessory the parts tend to be cut to the shape of the deck including the openings for the elevators and the deck fittings.
Shokaku was the first unit of the pair of large fast aircraft carriers of the Imperial Japanese Navy, completed shortly before the Pacific War. She had a full-length flight deck, an island superstructure on the starboard side and an extensive hangar space.
First degrease and sand the plastic deck; remnants of the mold parting line or traces of putty will show as waves under the thin veneer. Dry fit the part and mark the orientation in advance; with a flight deck the exact seating against the elevators and the island superstructure is essential. Peel the backing film off in sections and lay the veneer down gradually from one end, so that no air stays under it. Once glued, the surface can be unified with matte varnish and the deck markings added.
Before buying, check that the shape of the part corresponds to your kit; wooden decks are cut for a particular model. This is not a ship model but an accessory. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
