About product

The aircraft carrier Taiho in 1:700 scale, full-hull version

A plastic kit of the Japanese aircraft carrier Taiho from the Japanese manufacturer Fujimi. The model is treated as full hull, that is, with the hull including the underwater part; it is displayed on a base and suits a display case rather than a diorama with a water surface. The 1:700 scale is the most practical for large warships, because even an aircraft carrier stays a reasonable size. The particular contents of the package are not stated here.

The real subject

The Taiho was the first Japanese aircraft carrier with an armored flight deck and with an enclosed bow, which was to let the ship keep a high speed even in a rising sea. She entered service in the spring of 1944 and became the flagship of the carrier force. She was committed in June 1944 at the Battle of the Philippine Sea, where a torpedo from an American submarine hit her shortly after her own aircraft had taken off. The hit itself was not fatal; what proved fatal were the released fuel vapors, which spread through the enclosed spaces of the ship and exploded. The Taiho sank several hours after the attack, after a mere three months of active service.

Building and painting tips

The armored flight deck is a characteristic feature of the Taiho and deserves a flat surface with no sunken joints, so sand and polish the area after gluing. Build the island joined to the funnel separately and glue it only after the deck has been painted. The small anti-aircraft weapons are the finest parts in this scale; paint them before you separate them from the fret. Spray the underwater part on its own and mask the waterline, as a crisp line markedly lifts the impression of the finished model.

Who the model is for

  • collectors of Japanese aircraft carriers of the Second World War
  • modelers who want a ship with an armored deck in their collection
  • anyone interested in a full-hull display version on a base
  • more experienced builders of ship models

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
