This set from the manufacturer SX-Art brings self-adhesive stencils for spraying the color scheme on a model of the Douglas F4D-1 Skyray carrier aircraft in 1:48 scale. The stencils define the shapes that are applied with an airbrush, so the colored areas and their boundaries are created by spraying. The product has nothing to do with masking the canopy glazing.
The Douglas F4D-1 Skyray was an American single-engine carrier fighter of the 1950s with an unusually broad wing close to a delta in shape and without a conventional tailplane. It was designed as a fast-climbing interceptor for the Navy. In 1962 it was redesignated F-6A as part of the unification of designations.
The large continuous area of the wing is rewarding for stencils, but it tempts you into spraying fast and heavily. It is precisely on such an area that a step along the edge then shows. Do the opposite: low pressure, low flow and two or three thin coats with a short flash-off between them. Choose the order of the shades from light to dark, with carrier schemes typically the light underside first and then the darker upper surfaces. Apply the stencil only to a fully matured surface and press it down from the center toward the edges so that no air is trapped under it; on a broad wing a bubble is easy to miss. Press the film home around the leading and trailing edges, as that is where paint creeps under most often. Remove it shortly after the paint has set, and slowly, so that paint is not pulled off the sharp edge of the wing down to the plastic.
