A printed decal sheet in 1:48 scale for a model of the carrier fighter aircraft F-14A in the markings of the naval fighter squadron VF-41 from the period of its service aboard the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz between 1978 and 1980. This is neither a kit nor a model but a separate accessory for a kit already bought. The exact extent of the sheet, the number of machines and the number of schemes are given on the box of the set.
The F-14A was a two-seat carrier fighter aircraft with a variable-geometry wing and a pair of engines. The sweep of the wing changed automatically with the speed of flight, which made it possible to reconcile a slow approach to the deck with a high speed in the upper part of the envelope. The crew consisted of a pilot and a weapon systems operator, who worked a powerful radar able to track several targets at once. The squadron with the nickname Black Aces was one of the first units to re-equip with this type. The turn of the 1970s and 1980s is interesting from the modeling point of view because carrier aircraft then still wore colorful and conspicuous markings, which in later years gave way to low-visibility gray finishes.
First paint the model and go over it with a gloss varnish. The colored marks on the vertical tail surfaces and the lettering make up a large part of the final impression for this period, so work on them calmly and in stages. Cut the motif close around the print, soak it in lukewarm water and let it rest. A softener will help the decal flow around the panel lines and the curves. Once it has dried, wash off the adhesive residue and unify the surface with a satin varnish, so that the decal does not come across as stuck-on paper.
