About product

Focke-Wulf Fw 190D-9 Langnasen-Dora, 1:48 (Dragon)

An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:48 scale from Dragon. The subject is the Focke-Wulf Fw 190D-9, the version known thanks to its characteristic lengthened nose under the nickname Langnasen-Dora, that is, the long-nosed Dora. The model is meant to be cemented together and painted, and in 1:48 scale it offers a sensible compromise between the size of the finished model and the amount of detail.

The real subject

The Fw 190D-9 came about by converting the proven Fw 190 airframe from a radial engine to the liquid-cooled inverted V12 Junkers Jumo 213. The change of powerplant called for the front of the fuselage to be lengthened and, for balance, for a plug in the rear as well, which gave the aircraft a slim, markedly elongated silhouette. The radiator was placed as a ring in front of the engine, so from the front the nose looks much like that of the radial version. Compared with the earlier versions of the A series the type brought better performance at higher altitudes, where the older engine ran out of breath. It reached the squadrons at the end of 1944 and was built until the end of the war; technically it is one of the most advanced piston fighters of its day.

Building and painting tips

Start with the cockpit, because once the fuselage is closed up you cannot reach it. Check any nose weight before cementing the fuselage halves together, so that the model does not sit down on its tail wheel. Thin cement for plastic applied with a fine brush keeps the seams clean. Apply a filler primer before painting; with three-color schemes pre-shading the panels helps. Mask the canopy, ideally with a shaped mask or narrow tape. Apply the decals onto gloss clear, decal softener helps on broken-up surfaces, and then even the whole model out with a flat or semi-gloss coat. At the end a fine wash in the engraved lines and discreet traces of service on the leading edges and in the exhaust area come in useful.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of piston fighters from the end of the Second World War
  • Modelers who build the Fw 190 line of development from the radial-engined to the V12-engined versions
  • Those interested in 1:48 scale with enough room for cockpit detailing
  • Moderately advanced modelers with experience of masking and decals

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The main difference is the powerplant. Instead of a radial engine the D-9 has the liquid-cooled inverted V12 Junkers Jumo 213, because of which it has a lengthened nose as well as a lengthened rear fuselage. The result is better performance at higher altitudes.

Loosely translated, the long-nosed Dora. The letter D in the version designation was read as Dora in the spelling alphabet, and the qualifier refers to the markedly elongated nose compared with the earlier versions.

With tail-wheel fighters this usually does not apply, but with an elongated nose it pays to try the balance dry before cementing the fuselage together. If the instructions call for weight, do not leave it out.

The binding overview is given in the instructions enclosed by the manufacturer.
