A machined metal barrel in 1:48 from the Polish firm Aber for a model of the German Sd.Kfz.184 Elefant heavy tank destroyer. It is not a kit: it is a replacement part. In the smaller scale of 1:48 a good barrel matters all the more: the plastic part is thinner, warps more easily and the parting line is even harder to sand away than in a larger scale. A metal barrel is straight, perfectly circular and has a really drilled muzzle, so the model gains a clean and accurate look.
The Sd.Kfz.184 Elefant came about by rebuilding the earlier Ferdinand vehicles: it was given a machine gun mount in the frontal hull armor, a commander's cupola and other changes drawn from combat experience. It was a heavy, heavily armored machine with a gun of 88 mm caliber and a barrel length of 71 calibers, housed in a fixed superstructure at the rear of the hull. Its high weight and electric transmission made the vehicle hard to move, but at long range its gun was very effective.
Cut the plastic barrel off as close to the mantlet as possible, clean the hole out with a drill bit and keep trying the metal part dry, as in a small scale the slightest inaccuracy is enough for the barrel to sag. It is glued with super glue a drop at a time, ideally applied with a pin. Degrease the metal before painting and use a primer for metal. Fit the barrel only once the hull is painted and weathered.
This is an accessory, not a standalone model. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.
