A photo-etched detail set from the Polish maker Aber in 1:48 scale, listed as the additional set vol. 4 with a focus on the side armor skirts. It is not a model of the tank but an accessory to a plastic kit of the Pz.Kpfw. IV medium tank in the Ausf. H version or the early Ausf. J form. The metal parts offer a thickness that matches the scale and, together with the etched hangers, they look considerably more realistic than the plastic screens from the original kit.
The side armor screens, Schürzen at the time, were mounted on the Pz.Kpfw. IV on tubular rails above the running gear. They protected the thinner sides of the hull against rounds from anti-tank rifles and against shaped-charge ammunition. They were made of thin sheet, bent easily against the terrain and were commonly lost in the field — a number of surviving photographs show vehicles with only part of the screens or with none at all. The Ausf. H and early Ausf. J versions represent the most widespread form of the tank in the second half of the war.
Separate the parts with a scalpel, not by twisting. Assemble and seat the supporting rails and hangers before you fit the screens themselves — otherwise they are hard to line up flat. Glue them with cyanoacrylate glue. It is exactly on the side skirts that rendering service deformation pays off: a slight bend, a torn corner or a missing part. Degrease the metal before painting and use a primer for metal; build the weathering with a wash into the gaps of the hangers and dusty pigments along the lower edge.
This is a detail accessory, not a standalone model. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
