A stand-alone resin figure in 1:48 scale. The winter dress is what defines it: thicker layers of clothing change the whole volume of the figure, the shoulders and hips are fuller and the folds deeper than on a summer figure of the same range. That decides which scene the casting belongs in and how it will be painted.
A winter figure belongs on a winter base, otherwise it comes across as false. Snow, though, optically whitens a scene and a small dark figure either gets lost in it or, on the contrary, looks cut out. It helps not to put the figure in the middle of a white area but at a boundary, at the edge of a rutted track, against a tree trunk, by a curb, where it has a darker background behind it. Tracks in the snow leading to the feet are a simple trick that anchors a figure and at the same time gives a scene a direction of movement; make them only after the figure is glued on, so that they join up. In 1:48 the figure comes out at roughly three and a half centimeters, so beside a model of a vehicle or a tree it works as a reliable measure of height.
Cut the casting block off with a fine-toothed saw and level the mating surface so that the figure stands straight even after being sunk into snow compound. Scrape off the parting line running along the outer sides of the arms and legs with a scalpel held flat. Then wash the casting in lukewarm water with detergent and spray on a thin primer. With winter clothing it makes sense to work with the depth of the folds: a dark wash into the grooves and a lighter dry brush on the crests of the cloth create the volume that will save the figure in white surroundings. Take care that the overall lightness of the figure stays below the lightness of the snow, otherwise the scene loses legibility. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue, and sand wet and with respiratory protection.
The figure is supplied unpainted, as a resin casting. Paints, glue and a base are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
