About product

Zoom, the narrowed He 111Z Zwilling photo-etched set 1:48 (Eduard)

Zoom is the name of a specific accessory range from the Czech manufacturer Eduard, and it is worth knowing exactly what it means. It is not a full photo-etched set covering a model from the cockpit to the landing gear. Zoom is a deliberately narrowed selection from one, focused on what is most clearly visible once the build is finished, typically the instrument panel, the seat belts and a few panels in the crew area. The point is simple: for a fraction of the time the modeler gets the greater part of the visible effect. For completeness, Eduard's range also holds self-adhesive masks for masking glazing and wheels and combined sets bringing several partial sets together; this product is neither.

The real subject

The He 111Z Zwilling, meaning twin, came about in an unusual way. Two He 111 airframes were joined by a new center wing section with a fifth engine, so the resulting machine had two fuselages and five engines. It was intended above all to tow heavy cargo gliders, which single-engine and twin-engine tugs could not manage. Only a small series was built and operational use stayed limited. For a modeler that makes it all the more interesting a subject, because there are not many such configurations.

Usage tips

Zoom is fitted early, before the fuselage is closed, so prepare it right at the start of the build. The raised plastic relief usually has to be sanded away under a photo-etched instrument panel. Separate the parts with a scalpel on a hard surface and transfer them with tweezers. They are glued with cyanoacrylate, carefully on color-printed parts, because excess glue fogs the printing. Printed surfaces are not repainted, only sealed with a flat clear coat at the end. Degrease bare brass and spray it with a primer for metal.

Who the set is for

  • modelers who want to lift the standard of a cockpit quickly without a full photo-etched set
  • first-time users of photo-etched parts, as Zoom has a smaller, clearer scope
  • builders of the He 111Z in 1:48 scale
  • anyone who values the ratio of effect to time spent

The set is an accessory for a plastic kit, not a stand-alone model. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is an Eduard range with a narrowed selection of photo-etched parts. It concentrates on the most visible places in the crew area, unlike a full photo-etched set.

It is not. Masks are a separate range of self-adhesive templates. Here these are photo-etched metal parts.

At the start, before the fuselage is closed. Once the build is finished you cannot reach the interior.

No. The printing is left as it is and only sealed with a flat clear coat at the end.
