About product

Manshu Ki-79 A 1:48 — kit from RS Models

A model of the Japanese Ki-79 trainer produced by Manshu in 1:48 scale. RS Models is one of the manufacturers focused on less common types that the large brands do not offer, and its kits have the character of short-run production: softer plastic, finely suggested surface detail and higher demands on fit than mass-produced kits. The exact contents of the package are stated on the box and in the manufacturer's instructions.

The real subject

The Ki-79 was a trainer derived from the Nakajima Ki-27 fighter. It was based on its design scheme — a cantilever low-wing monoplane with fixed landing gear and a radial engine — but was given a less powerful engine and modifications to suit the training role. It was built by a manufacturer operating in Manchuria and the machines served for advanced pilot training. The versions differed in the number of seats in the cockpit and in details of the equipment, so they can be told apart by the shape of the canopy.

Building and painting tips

With short-run kits reckon with the parts needing to be tried dry and adjusted — the sprue gates tend to be thicker and the mating surfaces should be leveled on abrasive paper laid on glass before gluing. Build the cockpit interior bearing in mind that it is clearly visible on this type; before you close the fuselage, check the position of the seats and the instrument panel. Fit the fixed landing gear only after clear coating, as it is easily damaged. Deal with the seams with a thin layer of filler and sand them only once it has fully cured. Start the painting with a primer, which on softer plastic will also reveal any remaining scratches. Training machines tended to be conspicuously colored, so a bright shade calls for an even undercoat and several thin coats.

Who the model is for

  • Modelers interested in Japanese aviation and its less known types.
  • Builders looking for an unusual model for a 1:48 scale collection.
  • More experienced modelers used to short-run kits.
  • Anyone interested in the development line derived from the Ki-27 fighter.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Rather not. Short-run kits call for trying the fit of the parts dry, leveling the mating surfaces and filling the seams.

Check against the description on the box whether resin or photo-etched parts are in the package as well.

In design it follows the Nakajima Ki-27 fighter, but with an engine and equipment adapted to the training role.

The cockpit interior, which is clearly visible on this type, and the fixed landing gear — fit that only after clear coating, so that it is not damaged.
