Self-adhesive cut New Ware masks for the model of the night fighter Dornier Do 17Z-10 in 1:48 scale, in the most comprehensive step of the range. Compared with the basic set it is a markedly richer sheet: besides the frames of the glazing and the wheels it holds further masks for taking the model further. For the broken-up glazed nose of the Dornier it is the most complete solution to masking available.

Why mask from the inside as well

On an airplane with such a large glazed area the frame is visible from both sides. If it is sprayed only from the outside, clear plastic shows through when you look into the cockpit and the illusion of a glazed framework falls apart. Inner masks make it possible to spray the frames in the interior shade before the glazing is glued into the airframe, and the finished cockpit then looks right from every angle. On versions with a dark night finish the difference is especially plain.

The real subject

The Do 17Z-10 is the night fighter form of the twin-engine Dornier Do 17 of the period of the Second World War, with a modified nose and fixed armament. Only a small number of machines came into being, so it is a short development side branch of the more common bomber form.

Recommended order of work

• First mask and spray the inner side of the glazing in the interior shade
• Leave the inner masks in place until the outer coat is finished as well
• Glue the glazing into the airframe only once both coats have dried
• Spray the outer frames in thin coats, at lower pressure and perpendicular to the surface
• Take both sets of masks off at the very end, so that dust from sanding does not get into the cockpit
