An accessory set from L Decals Studio: two R-77 air-to-air missiles in 1:48 scale and a sheet of small technical lettering. It is not a kit of an aircraft but underwing ordnance to supplement or replace the parts from the box. With the R-77 the replacement is especially rewarding because of the complex tail surfaces, which ordinary tooling reproduces only in simplified form.
The R-77, in Russian service the RVV-AE and under the NATO reporting name AA-12 Adder, is a Russian medium-range air-to-air missile with active radar guidance in the terminal phase of flight, thanks to which the pilot no longer has to hold a course toward the target after launch. Its most conspicuous recognition feature is the grid fins at the tail, made up of small cells, which give a large control effect with a small installed depth. The missile is intended for the MiG-29 and the Sukhoi series of machines and is also offered in export renderings.
Wash the parts in lukewarm soapy water. The grid fins are the most delicate part, so handle them with tweezers and never clean them with a brush. Cut the casting stubs off with a saw and glue with cyanoacrylate glue. Apply the paint to the grid in heavily thinned coats from a greater distance so that the cells do not fill in; an airbrush is practically essential here. Lay the lettering down over a gloss clear coat and settle it with a decal softener.
