Nine markings for P-51D fighters in 1:48 scale, all from the units operating out of Iwo Jima in 1945. The 15th, 21st and 506th Fighter Groups are represented, and for each machine the serial number, the squadron and the pilot's name are given.
Responsibility details are not available.
When Iwo Jima fell in the spring of 1945, the US Army Air Forces gained an island halfway to the Japanese home islands. From there single-engine fighters began to take off to escort heavy bombers, on routes of over a thousand kilometers one way, entirely over water and with not a single alternate airfield. A flight lasted as much as eight hours, an escorting bomber handled the navigation, and an engine failure over the sea meant a certain end. These were the longest combat operations that single-seat fighters undertook during the war.
The sheet covers the P-51D-20 and P-51D-25 production blocks and is divided between three groups. The 15th Fighter Group is represented by the 45th, 47th and 78th Fighter Squadrons, the 21st by the 46th, 72nd and 531st, and the 506th by the 457th, 458th and 462nd. With each option you will find the serial number of the machine, the unit and the pilot's name, from lieutenants to majors, so the markings can also be traced in the literature.
The Mustangs from Iwo Jima carried conspicuous recognition stripes on the tail surfaces and on the wings, meant to stop bomber crews confusing them with Japanese fighters. It is exactly these colored areas that make the model an engaging piece, because they differed between the groups in shape and in color, and without the sheet they can only be done by masking.
Before their turn comes, the model needs a smooth gloss finish. On large areas, such as the wing stripes or the national markings, it pays to work in sections and to let the film settle under its own weight before you start pressing it into the panel lines. Blot the remaining water with the edge of a paper towel rather than with a cloth, which would shift the thin print. A drop of softener helps it snap into the lines, but apply it only once dry, or the surface will wrinkle.
