About product

Photo reconnaissance Mustangs over Europe

The designation F-6 belonged to Mustangs converted for tactical photo reconnaissance. Obliquely and vertically aimed cameras were built into the fuselage behind the pilot, and the machine then flew low, fast and usually alone. The sheet covers two such aircraft of the 109th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron, which came under the 67th Reconnaissance Group.

Shady Lady and Oh Johnie

The first is an F-6D with the serial number 44-14699 and the name Shady Lady, flown by the pilot Lieutenant Slonneger and looked after by the mechanic Sergeant Dalek. It came about by conversion from version P-51D. The second airframe, F-6C 43-25081 named Oh Johnie, is based on the earlier version P-51C with razorback glazing and is credited to Lieutenant Childers with the mechanic Corporal du Foss.

What you get

The package contains a sheet of waterslide decals at 1:48 size. What the model gets is an identity, not a shape, so a Mustang kit has to be owned or obtained separately. The difference between the two machines is one of shape as well: version C has a different canopy from the later D, which is worth taking into account when choosing a variant.

Working with the sheet

Reconnaissance Mustangs usually flew in bare metal, and it is precisely on a polished surface that the edge of the film is most visible. It therefore pays to cut close, to apply onto gloss clear and, once dry, to go over the join with weak decal softener. Only at the very end comes the unifying clear coat.

Why reconnaissance machines are collected

Photo reconnaissance aircraft stood aside from the kill statistics, yet the planning of ground operations rested on them. The photographs from their cameras determined where the columns would advance and where a bridge was still whole. A model with such markings therefore tells of a different part of the war from another fighter with a row of crosses under the cockpit.

FAQ

In built-in cameras for tactical reconnaissance. The airframe stayed essentially the same; what changed was the equipment behind the cockpit and sometimes the cut-outs in the sides of the fuselage.

If you want to build both variants, yes. One is based on version D, the other on the earlier version C, which has a differently handled canopy.

Besides the personal names and numbers, the sheet contains accompanying markings for both machines. The serial numbers and the names are printed separately.
