A color print of the instrument panel and cockpit details with 3D texture on decal paper from Red Fox Studio. A set cut for a kit from another maker also exists under the same name, so make sure you are taking the one for Eduard — the shape of the parts differs between kits.
The D-5 block comes from the start of production of the variant with the bubble canopy, and that matters for the cockpit: an early machine differs inside from later series in its equipment, above all in the form of the gunsight above the panel. Anyone who builds the early version and uses a panel from a late machine commits a mistake that a specialist will notice immediately. The panel itself is black, with the flight instruments grouped in the middle and a prominent panel on the right side of the cockpit; on the left runs a console with the throttle and other levers. The bubble canopy meanwhile covers almost nothing — the cockpit is visible from the side and from above, along its whole length, and empty black areas cannot be hidden in it.
With this cockpit the panel is literally on display, so the difference between techniques shows at first glance. A decal from the box is a flat print. A photo-etched part gives relief, but you have to create the color and the scales yourself. Hand painting small gauges in 1:48 is the ceiling for most modelers. A color print with a three-dimensional structure gives both at once. The base has to be smooth and matte, otherwise silvering will appear under the print; settle the set with a decal softener and let it dry out.
