A set of photo-etched metal parts aimed at the exterior of the Tornado model to the ASSTA 3.1 standard, in 1:48. It is made by the Czech company Eduard. Exterior sets concentrate on the elements that are made of thin sheet metal on the real aircraft: covers, grilles, protrusions and loops. In plastic they inevitably come out thicker, because a mold cannot hold a finer thickness.
The Panavia Tornado is a twin-engine combat aircraft with a variable-geometry wing, developed by the international Panavia consortium with German, British and Italian participation. Its hallmarks are the high-set wing, which sweeps in flight according to the regime, and a crew of two in tandem. The ASSTA 3.1 designation refers to an upgrade standard of the avionics and systems that some of the IDS aircraft went through. The external differences between standards tend to lie in the details of antennas and covers, which is exactly what photo-etched sets concentrate on.
Exterior etched parts are glued onto an already finished and sanded surface, so think the order of the steps through in advance. First finish filling and sanding the seams, and only then position the etched parts, otherwise you will tear them off while sanding. Roughen and degrease the spot, and apply the glue in a microscopic amount on the tip of a wire. Excess cyanoacrylate glue turns white once it has dried and on a smooth surface it shows immediately. If an etched part replaces a plastic protrusion, cut the plastic off first and level the area flat. Painting then follows after the part is glued on, so that the transition between metal and plastic disappears under a common coat of primer.
This is an add-on set, not a model in its own right. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
