A crew member in an immersion suit in 1:48 scale. A figure for scenes around the Swedish and Finnish jets of the Cold War.
Responsibility details are not available.
A figure is not an accessory that gets glued to an empty spot. It decides where the viewer looks before the aircraft does, and so it is handled like an actor: it has to have a reason to stand where it stands. It works most strongly when it is directed at something specific, that is at a ladder, at a colleague or at an open cockpit.
The equipment goes, among other things, with machines that had a two-man crew, that is with the SK60 trainer and with the two-seat versions of the Lansen and the Draken. With those in particular it is worth standing two figures side by side, because a scene with one person at a two-seat aircraft looks unfinished. A difference in the height of the heads and a slightly different angle of the shoulders turn two separate castings into a pair who are clearly talking to each other.
The distance from the aircraft matters more than the pose. A meter and a half from the landing gear in reality means about three centimeters at this reduction, which looks natural; right at the wheel the figure is in the way and five centimeters off it loses the connection. The base deserves the same attention as the figure, because without a shadow and without dirt on the boots the figure lifts away from the surface.
The seams left by the mold are removed with a scrape of the blade, small bubbles are filled, and the finished figure is glued on at the very end, when the scene is done and there is no risk of the modeler catching against it. Under the soles belongs a drop of glue and a little dust of the same mixture that covers the surface around, so that the figure really stands on the base and does not just lie on it.
