A sheet of waterslide decals in 1:48 scale from the Czech maker AML Decals. It is neither a kit nor a finished model but an accessory for a model of the Lavochkin La-5FN fighter. The set brings two finish options for machines that in 1944 flew in the colors of the Czechoslovak unit deployed in support of the Slovak National Uprising. For a modeler it is one of the few chances to build an La-5 in markings other than Soviet ones.
The Lavochkin La-5FN was a Soviet fighter with a radial engine, wood and metal construction and very good performance at low and medium altitudes. The FN version had a supercharged engine with direct fuel injection and was among the best Soviet fighters of the middle of the war. In the autumn of 1944 a Czechoslovak fighter unit equipped with these machines flew to Slovak territory and operated from an insurgent airfield in a confused and rapidly changing situation. The deployment was short but historically exceptional and is to this day among the most frequently covered subjects of Czech and Slovak modeling.
The La-5 had a wooden fuselage skin with a smooth painted surface, so it pays to give the even gloss coat under the decals some attention. Cut the marking out closely, soak it in warm water and let it rest until the carrier film releases by itself. After transferring it, blot the water away and adjust the position with a damp brush. Use a softener for the stars over panel lines. The finishes of the insurgent machines wore quickly in service, so once the decals are dry, knock the sheen back with a matte coat and add restrained weathering of exhaust stains and scuffs.
The package holds only decals. The kit, the paints and the glue are not included, unless stated otherwise.
