Masking set for the Spitfire Mk VB in Maltese service, 1:48 scale. Besides films for the cockpit and two insignia masks it contains a pair of metal Hispano cannons including their fairings.
Responsibility details are not available.
In the spring of 1942 Malta was the most heavily bombed place in Europe and fighters were delivered to it from the decks of aircraft carriers. The Spitfire Mk VBs that took off from there had a face of their own: a desert filter under the nose, azure shades instead of European camouflage and often national insignia only hastily oversprayed. It is this form that is among the most rewarding subjects of the whole Spitfire family.
The B version carried two cannons of 20 mm caliber complemented by four machine guns. The cannon barrels projected a long way ahead of the leading edge and were covered by elongated aerodynamic fairings, which form a prominent element on the wing. The set brings both in metal, so the greatest weakness of the plastic version is dropped, namely a bent barrel with a blunt end.
What this set adds over the plain masking item with the same subject are two turned components. They are the parts on which plastic loses most: the barrel of a Hispano is long and thin, and an injection mold neither fills it straight nor leaves a real opening at the muzzle. The aerodynamic fairing around it is at the same time one of the first things the eye finds on the wing, so a straight metal tube with an open bore changes the impression of the whole leading edge. The masking part stays the same in both items; only the metal is added.
