Masks for the cockpit glazing of the Spitfire Mk XIV fighter with the universal wing in 1:48 scale. Cut to the Academy model, with parts for both sides of the canopy.
Responsibility details are not available.
Replacing the previous engine with the stronger Griffon twelve-cylinder transformed the airframe of the fighter more than any earlier modification. The nose lengthened and received prominent bulges above the cylinder heads, the propeller gained a fifth blade and the tail surfaces had to be enlarged so that the machine would hold its heading at full power. The resulting version was among the fastest piston fighters of its day and in the summer of 1944 it proved itself chasing flying bombs over southern England. The letter in the designation refers to the universal arrangement of the wing, which allowed the mix of armament to be chosen according to the task.
The cockpit has a side sliding section, a windscreen with a flat armored plate and frames that are not the same width on top and at the sides. Cutting strips by hand into such a pattern tends to be slow and the result is often given away by an uneven thickness of the frames. The parts of this set are die-cut to the molding, so the framing comes out regular and does not have to be tidied up with a brush after spraying.
Anyone building a machine with the recognition stripes of the summer of 1944 will appreciate that the masks stay in place through several consecutive coats. The width of the stripes is measured out with tape across the whole fuselage and finished glazing would otherwise suffer from it.
