About product

Eduard 1:48 Sukhoi Su-27 masking set

This is a set of pre-cut masks from thin kabuki type masking tape, made by the Czech company Eduard of Obrnice near Most. The set serves to cover the glazing and other areas of a Su-27 model in 1:48 scale during spray painting. The masks are cut to the shape of particular parts, so the tedious cutting of tape to the canopy frames is dispensed with. Please note that the package contains neither a model of the aircraft nor paints; it is an accessory to the base kit.

The real subject

The Su-27 is a Soviet twin-engine heavy fighter aircraft from the Sukhoi design bureau, designated Flanker in the NATO code. The prototype of the T-10 series flew in 1977 and production machines were entering service in the middle of the eighties. The typical features of the airframe are the smooth blending of the fuselage into the wing, a pair of engines in separate nacelles and a large internal fuel volume, which gives the aircraft considerable range without auxiliary fuel tanks. The canopy glazing is a prominent element on a model thanks to the large canopy, and that is exactly why it is worth masking it accurately.

How to use the masks

First rid the surface of the glazing of fingerprints and grease. Lift the mask out of the sheet with tweezers or the tip of a scalpel, lay it on and press it down through a stick or with your finger so that the edge beds down well. Spray the paint in several thin coats, otherwise it may creep under the edge of the mask. Take the mask off shortly after the paint has dried, while the coat is not yet fully cured. The remaining areas of the glazing can be covered with ordinary tape or masking fluid.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who want sharp transitions of the canopy frames without cutting tape by hand
  • Builders of modern fighter aircraft in 1:48 scale
  • Anyone who sprays with an airbrush and wants to save time in preparation
  • Beginners, for whom masking the canopy is the most difficult part of the build

The set contains neither a kit nor paints. Check beforehand that the masks match the kit you are building, because they are cut to the shape of the parts of a particular model.

FAQ

It is not. It is a masking set, that is an accessory to a model. The kit itself has to be bought separately.

Cut masking tape of the kabuki type, which adapts well to curved glazing and does not pull the paint off when removed.

The masks are cut to the shape of the parts of a particular kit. Check beforehand that the set matches the model you are building.

Ideally shortly after the paint has dried to the touch. With a fully cured finish there is a risk of the edge of the paint flaking off.
