A set of photo-etched parts in thin sheet, intended to refine the external surface of a model of the Sukhoi Su-27S aircraft in 1:48 scale. The designation exterior means that the set is aimed at the outside of the airframe, that is not at the cockpit and the instrument panel. It is not a kit of the aircraft but an accessory for one. Photo-etched sheet is used precisely where the real subject is thin or perforated and injection-molded plastic cannot imitate it, so the resulting surface of the model reads more finely than out of the box.
The Su-27S is the single-seat production version of the twin-engine fighter aircraft from the Sukhoi design bureau. It has an integrated aerodynamic layout in which the fuselage blends smoothly into the wing and contributes to lift, engines in separate nacelles and a large internal fuel volume. The surface of the airframe is broken up by a quantity of covers, extraction and venting openings and smaller panels, which in 1:48 scale are far smaller than the thickness of a plastic part, and it is exactly here that a photo-etched set makes the most sense.
Separate the parts with a scalpel on a hard surface, not with scissors. Sand the areas the photo-etched part is glued to smooth first and remove the plastic original if need be, as otherwise the new part will stand above the surface. Glue with cyanoacrylate applied with the tip of a wire, as an excess will fill the fine texture. Before painting, apply a base coat intended for metal, as otherwise the paint comes off smooth sheet with every handling. On gray camouflage schemes a fine panel wash after clear-coating helps, as it pulls the new details out without soiling the model.
This is not a model of the aircraft but an accessory for one. The base kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.
