It makes it possible to open the gun bays in the wing and show the inside, which in a kit is usually blanked off. The package does not contain a model of the aircraft; that has to be bought separately. The breakdown of the parts is described in the enclosed instructions.
An open gun bay is one of the most rewarding ways of bringing a model to life, because it introduces depth and technical detail into an otherwise smooth wing surface. The set replaces the closed surface of the model with a bay with internal structure and the relevant covers, which can be displayed hinged open. The model then looks like a machine under maintenance rather than a sealed replica.
The Spitfire Mk.II followed on from the first production versions and carried a more powerful variant of the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine. The letter b in the designation refers to the wing form with mixed armament, which differs from the basic variant in the arrangement of the gun bays. That is exactly why Eduard offers sets for both forms separately.
Expect to be cutting into the wing. Mark the opening out first, score it with a scriber and only then cut it out gradually, ideally by drilling a row of small holes around the perimeter. Wash the mold release agent off the resin parts, cut the casting blocks off with a saw and sand wet or with airway protection. Paint the inside of the bay and add shading before you build it in, because later a brush can hardly reach inside. It is bonded with cyanoacrylate glue; wipe any excess off at once.
This is an accessory for a plastic kit, not a model in its own right. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
