About product

Skalski's Circus over Tunisia

The North African campaign of 1943 gave rise to an unusual unit. A group of experienced Polish fighter pilots was temporarily attached to the British No. 145 Squadron, and in the press of the day a nickname derived from the name of its leader stuck to it. The sheet offers three of their machines with the fuselage code ZX and the serial numbers EN527, EN267 and EN315, together with a fourth option, the aircraft coded ZX-O with the number EN355 from the host squadron itself.

The Polish Fighting Team served at the front for only a few months, yet it claimed a string of confirmed victories and its members then went on to command positions with British units. That is exactly why these machines remain a permanently popular subject, and their desert finish differs markedly from the schemes used over Europe.

The desert finish and working with the sheet

The aircraft carried sand and brown shades on their upper surfaces with a light blue underside, against which the roundels and letters from the sheet contrast pleasantly. One of the airframes listed also appears on other sheets from this brand in its later service with another unit, so it is possible to build a pair of models of the same aircraft in different periods.

It is recommended to lay the decals onto a glossy base and to flatten the finished model only afterwards, so that the carrier film is not visible. The 1:48 scale is the most widespread one for this type, so the sheet will find use with kits from several makers.

Besides the codes and the roundels, the sheet also carries the small serial numbers of the kind found on the real machines at the rear of the fuselage and under the tail surfaces. In a desert environment they were quickly dusty, so once applied they will take a light dusting of pigment without becoming illegible.
