Quinta Studio 1:48 Yak-4 vacuformed canopy

A vacuum-formed clear canopy from Quinta Studio for a model of the Soviet Yakovlev Yak-4 aircraft in 1:48 scale. As a replacement for the glazing from the corresponding kit it is thinner, clearer and renders the framing more faithfully. It is a detail accessory, not a complete model.

The real subject

The Yakovlev Yak-4 was a Soviet twin-engine light bomber and reconnaissance aircraft of the early Second World War that followed on from the Yak-2 line. The glazed canopy covered the crew and offered a good view.

Use and building

  • Cut the canopy out carefully close to the edge with a sharp knife or with photo-etch scissors.
  • Vacuum-formed parts are thin, so sand the edge down gradually to the final line.
  • Glue with thin cyanoacrylate glue or with a cement for canopies so that the clear part does not fog.
  • The framing masks and sprays easily; a thin part comes into its own with an open canopy.
