Silhouet is a classic wooden ship kit in 1:60 scale from the range of the Constructo brand. Unlike plastic models it is not built from sprues but put together from wooden parts, a planked hull and metal fittings. The basis is a central keel board with transverse bulkheads onto which the planking of thin strips is glued one piece at a time. The deck, the superstructures and the small fittings follow. The exact contents of the package, the number of parts, the make-up of the materials and the dimensions of the finished model are stated in the enclosed list of parts.
Building a wooden ship is similar for all subjects and differs a great deal from plastic modeling. You work with wood, you sand, you bend it wet or with heat, and the joints are glued with PVA wood glue. The hull is often planked twice — with a coarser lower layer and a finer visible veneer. The result lies not in the color but in the accuracy of the shape and the cleanliness of the wooden surface.
Set the bulkheads onto the building board at right angles and keep checking the symmetry of the hull, because a mistake at this stage cannot be put right later. Soak or warm the planking strips and shape them dry before gluing, so that you do not press on the joints. Apply the glue sparingly and wipe any excess off at once, otherwise the wood stain will not take in that spot. Once the hull is finished, sand it through finer grits and finish the surface with wood stain, oil or a clear varnish. Degrease the metal fittings before fitting them and repaint them if need be. For the rigging, get tweezers, needles and patience ready.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints, stains and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
