About product

HMS Nelson 1:700: waterline kit, Tamiya

An injection-molded plastic kit of the British battleship HMS Nelson in 1:700 scale from the Japanese manufacturer Tamiya, out of the Waterline range. The model is built as a waterline version, without the lower part of the hull, and can be displayed on a flat surface or in a diorama with a water surface. The characteristic silhouette of the Nelson, with the main gun armament concentrated ahead of the superstructure, is clearly readable in the model. The kit is supplied unassembled and unpainted.

The real subject

The Nelson was a British battleship with an unusual layout: all three main gun turrets of roughly 40 cm caliber were placed forward, ahead of the bridge structure, so that the heavy armor could be concentrated on a smaller, well-protected forward section. The ship was laid down in the 1920s and entered service in 1927. In the Second World War she took part in a number of operations including the Malta convoys and the landings in North Africa, in Sicily and at Salerno. Her silhouette is among the easiest to recognize of the battleships of the interwar era.

Building and painting tips

Glue the small parts with thin cement for plastic, drop by drop. Prime the hull and decks and paint them with an airbrush, and finish the deck details and armament with a brush. For a finer result, consider adding photo-etched railings and nets and display the model on a stand or in a water scene.

Who the model is for

  • For collectors of warships in 1:700 scale
  • For anyone interested in the Royal Navy and interwar battleships
  • For modelers who like to add photo-etched parts to ships
  • For builders of naval dioramas on the water

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It was an economical solution of the interwar years: concentrating the main turrets ahead of the superstructure made it possible to cover a smaller, well-protected area with heavy armor. The model keeps this typical silhouette faithfully.

Yes. It depicts the hull above the waterline, so you can display it on a flat surface as if on the water or set it into a water diorama.

They are not necessary; the model can be built straight from the box. Photo-etched railings and nets do markedly refine the look, though, and can be bought separately.
