A veneer deck for the battleship Yamato in a dark finish in 1:700 scale from Artwox Model is a variant of the wooden deck with a markedly darkened shade of the planks.
Responsibility details are not available.
An accessory to a plastic kit, not a model of the ship. It is a self-adhesive wooden veneer with the printed laying of the deck planks, cut to the shape of the decks of one particular kit, the Fujimi 421506. It differs from the basic version in its color finish: the veneer is in a dark shade that on a model reads like a deck treated with a dark coat or like heavily weathered wood.
The Yamato was the lead unit of the class of the same name of Japanese battleships, brought into service at the end of 1941. She carried nine 460 mm guns in three triple turrets and an armored citadel matching that caliber. The shade of Japanese decks has long been debated among modelers: period black and white photographs allow several readings, and a dark finish of the deck is therefore a stylistic choice rather than a documented standard.
Dark veneer makes greater demands on the surrounding paint: against a light gray hull it creates a sharp contrast that easily slips into an unnatural impression. It proves useful to even the whole thing out with a very thinned filter at the end and to lighten the decks gently with a dry brush along the edges of the planks. The gluing procedure is the same as with the light version: sand the engraving on the plastic, degrease with alcohol, lay it on dry, pull the film off in sections and work from the axis toward the sides. Fingerprints show more on a dark surface, so work through soft cloth or in gloves.
This is an accessory to a plastic kit, not a model of the ship. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.
