An accessory for a diorama made of pre-printed paper. It represents a sprawling factory hall in 1:700 scale, that is in the scale in which ship models of the waterline range are built. It is not a kit of a ship or injected plastic — the parts are cut from sheets, folded and glued, and the result is a building that can be placed next to finished models to create a harbor, shipyard or industrial scene. The manufacturer is the Japanese company Tamiya.
A model of a ship on its own looks lonely on a shelf. A backdrop gives the scene scale and context: from the size of the hall a viewer immediately estimates how large the vessel in front of them is. A paper structure is at the same time an undemanding way to fill the area of a diorama, because it does not have to be painted or filled. It also serves as a background for photographing finished models.
Cut the parts out with a sharp scalpel on a cutting mat and use a steel ruler for long straight edges. Score the folds in advance with the blunt side of a knife or with an empty ballpoint pen, and the edges will then be crisp and the walls will not ripple. Glue with PVA glue (white glue) for paper and apply it thinly; cyanoacrylate glue and solvent cements for plastic soak through paper and leave stains. The surface is printed, so painting is not necessary, but you can suggest weathering with a dry brush or with rubbed pastel dust — soot at the chimneys, grimy gutters, dust at the foot of the walls. It is advisable to back the large walls with thin card or a plastic sheet so that they do not move with moisture, and finally to glue the finished structure onto a firm base.
The accessory is supplied as a set of sheets to be cut out and glued. Glue, paints and a base board are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
