Yamato deck masking sheets in 1:700 scale

The set from Artwox Model contains masking sheets cut to the shape of the deck surfaces of the battleship Yamato in 1:700 scale. They are cut for one specific kit, so they line up with the molded deck and with the outlines of the superstructure. It is not a ship model and not a replacement deck part: you apply the paint yourself and the mask only bounds the area that is to be sprayed.

What masking the deck solves

In 1:700 scale the deck is threaded with small hatches, the feet of the superstructure and guide rails. Cutting such an outline from masking tape by hand means tens of minutes of work, and every overlap shows on the finished model. A pre-cut sheet does away with that work and, above all, makes the edge the same along both sides of the ship, which hand cutting almost never achieves symmetrically.

Gluing and spraying tips

Wash the plastic in lukewarm water with a drop of dish soap before masking and let it dry thoroughly; a mask holds less well on a greasy surface. Lay the sheets down in sections, press from the center out to the edges and run a toothpick along the edge so that paint does not creep under it. Spray at lower pressure and in thin coats; heavily applied paint builds a ridge along the edge. Take the mask off while the paint has only gone off, not after it has cured completely, and pull it back over itself at a sharp angle.
