The sheet from the manufacturer Kits-World offers code letters in the muted Dull Red shade of a height matching 48 inches on the real aircraft, which in 1:72 scale works out at roughly 17 mm. These are not the markings of one particular machine: the letters are assembled on the model one at a time into the combination you need. That comes in useful when you are building an aircraft whose code no box set contains, or when you want an exact replica of a machine from a period photograph. How many characters the sheet contains and in what make-up is given on the packaging.
Large letters and numerals on the sides of the fuselage allowed the quick identification of an aircraft and its unit. Their height, placement and shade followed regulations that changed over time: besides strong colors, muted shades were also used where it was desirable to limit the conspicuousness of the markings. With a particular machine, therefore, check what height and shade of code it actually carried in the given period.
Large decals forgive inaccuracy less than tiny lettering does. Work on a perfectly gloss surface, trim the film close to the print and set out the position beforehand: a strip of masking tape stuck on as a guide along the lower edge of the code has proved itself. Slide the letter on a thin layer of water, then blot the excess off with a tissue from the center toward the edges so that no bubble is left under the film. Plan the spacing between the characters dry first, because once dry a decal cannot be moved.
