About product

Allison V-1710 series C in 1:72 scale, a resin engine from CMK

The set brings the American liquid-cooled V12 Allison in the 1710-33 configuration, that is in the early series C version, as a casting. It is an accessory, not an aircraft kit: the set goes into a base plastic kit and makes sense where you want to open the cowling, show the engine bearers or display the engine on a stand beside the finished model.

The real subject

The Allison V-1710 was the only large-displacement American liquid-cooled V12 built in large numbers during the Second World War. The early series C powered the first generation of American fighters with this engine. It differs from the later series F in the arrangement of the reduction gear and the accessories, and the difference shows clearly on an exposed engine, which is why the manufacturer lists the two series as two separate sets. Choose according to the version of the aircraft you are building.

When the accessory is worth it and when it is not

An engine in 1:72 scale is a small part and with the cowling closed practically nothing of it will show. The work is worth it in two cases only: when you plan an opened or removed engine cover, or a maintenance scene, or when you want to display the engine on its own. If you are building an aircraft with a closed airframe, nobody will see the extra work on the finished model.

Working with resin

Wash the parts first in lukewarm soapy water so that they are free of release agent residue, because without that the paint will not hold. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a knife, do not snap them. Sanding is best done wet and with your airways protected. It is bonded with cyanoacrylate glue; cement for plastic does not hold on resin. Before gluing, try dry whether the part fits the space in your particular kit, and expect to have to rework the opening.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who want to show the engine bay on a kit in 1:72
  • Builders of dioramas with aircraft ground maintenance
  • More experienced modelers with experience of resin castings

The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

It is not. It is a resin accessory that replaces the engine in a base plastic kit. The aircraft kit itself has to be bought separately.

On an exposed engine yes: the series differ in the arrangement of the reduction gear and the accessories. Choose according to the version of the aircraft you are building.

Cyanoacrylate glue. Ordinary cement for plastic does not dissolve resin, so the joint would not hold.

No. Check compatibility with the particular kit you are building before buying, and expect to have to rework the engine bay.
