An injection-molded plastic kit of a Soviet armored train in 1:72 scale from UM, which has had armored trains and railway subjects in its range for a long time, with several related vehicles and flatcars following on from this item. The exact contents of the box, the number of parts and how many cars the train includes are stated on the box, and it pays to know them beforehand, because it is the extent of the train that decides how much room the finished model takes up.
Armored trains were used in Eastern Europe and in the Soviet Union from the days of the First World War and the Russian Civil War, and to a limited extent in the Second World War as well. A train usually combined an armored locomotive with fighting cars carrying gun and machine-gun armament and with flatcars for moving materiel or for antiaircraft defense. Their strength was firepower and armor protection; their fundamental limitation was being tied to the railway line.
Work car by car: assemble, paint and weather each unit of the train separately, and only then stand the whole thing on the track. Leave the bogies and running gear freely accessible as long as you can. The long flat surfaces of the sides will betray every imperfection in the filling, so sand the joints with progressively finer grits. Spray the primer in thin layers so that the rivets and engraved lines stay legible. For weathering, a dark wash into the recesses, restrained dry brushing on the edges and fine pigments on the running gear and the underside of the cars work well. A finished train looks best on a stretch of track and on a base — reckon on one from the start.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
