About product

Armstrong Whitworth A.W.52 1:72 from Mikromir

A plastic kit of a British experimental aircraft in flying wing layout, in 1:72 scale. It is supplied as a set of parts for assembly and painting. Check the exact number of parts, the contents of the package and the marking options on the manufacturer's box.

The real subject

The A.W.52 was a British research aircraft from the second half of the 1940s, built as a flying wing without a conventional fuselage and tail surfaces. It arose within a program that explored the behavior of laminar flow and the possibilities of laying out an airliner without a fuselage. It was powered by two jet units buried in the wing, and directional control was provided by vertical surfaces at the wing tips. Two jet-powered prototypes were built, and before them an unpowered demonstrator that served to verify the flying qualities. The type never reached series production, but it belongs among the most interesting British aerodynamic experiments of the postwar period and its shape is easy to remember to this day.

Building and painting tips

On a flying wing of such clean shape, perfect fit of the two wing halves is the key thing — try the joints dry in advance and fill and sand any steps, because on a smooth surface every unevenness shows. Finish and paint the cockpit and the landing gear bays before you close the central section. Apply a primer before the final coat, as it reveals any remaining scratches from sanding. Polished metal and smooth painted surfaces call for a carefully prepared base, otherwise small flaws stand out.

Who the model is for

  • collectors of prototypes and experimental aircraft in 1:72 scale
  • anyone interested in British aviation immediately after the Second World War
  • modelers who enjoy unusual shapes and flying wings
  • more advanced builders who can cope with fitting large surfaces

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. The A.W.52 was a research machine, only a few were built and the type never reached series production.

Rather for more experienced modelers. The large smooth surfaces of the flying wing call for careful fitting, filling and sanding.

You will find the number of parts, the decals and any accessories on the manufacturer's box.

We recommend a primer and an airbrush. On large smooth surfaces every transition and unevenness shows far more than on a model with many shapes.
