When something needs holding but not gluing for good

A double-sided strip is an unobtrusive helper on the modeling bench that solves a surprisingly wide handful of problems. It will hold a small part on a stick until you spray it. It will secure a model to a board so that it does not travel around the table while you paint. It will temporarily join two subassemblies when you need to find out whether they really fit together, before you reach for the glue. And under an abrasive sheet it turns an ordinary block into a custom sanding stick.

The thick layer has a specific reason

The adhesive here is applied in an unusually thick layer, around three quarters of a millimeter. A thin double-sided strip from a stationer only takes hold on a smooth surface, whereas this thick mass presses into the irregularities and will hold even a rough, broken or grainy surface. It is precisely where ordinary tape lets go after a while that this type keeps holding.

Practical notes

The strip measures twenty-five by seventy-five millimeters, so you can cut off exactly as much as you need and the rest stays in reserve. There are six of them in the package. It is better not to touch a freshly painted surface until the finish has cured perfectly, otherwise you will take a piece of the paint with you when removing it. Adhesive residue can be removed from plastic with alcohol; on resin and clear parts it is better to wipe the residue off mechanically. And one more small thing that anyone who has ever hunted for a part that flew off across the workshop will appreciate: a piece of the strip stuck to the edge of the work mat serves as a place to put parts down from which nothing will fall off.
