A decal sheet with two Flying Fortresses of the 487th Bomb Group of 1945 in 1:72 scale. It contains squadron codes, serial numbers and nose art.
Responsibility details are not available.
The bomb group the sheet relates to arrived in England still with Liberators, but in August 1944 it re-equipped with Boeing B-17Gs and flew out the rest of the war from the station at Lavenham in Suffolk. On the sheet are two of its machines from the last year of the war: serial number 43-37981 with the code 2C-B and the name Pleasure Bent, and aircraft 43-37975 with the code RS-A, whose nose art carried an ironic remark about twenty percent. The letter pairs before the dash distinguished the squadron, and the single letter after it the particular aircraft.
The large group marking on the tail surfaces passes over the vertical tail and over its leading edge, so apply it in sections and let the film dry between the individual steps. A natural metal surface is merciless: every grain of dust shows under a decal as a bump, so polish the area before applying and even it out with varnish once dry. The nose art belongs on the left side under the cockpit; check its exact position against the drawing.
The group's color bands on the wing and the tail changed fairly often in the last months of the war, so check the appearance of the machine against the date you want to capture. Crews moreover added mission symbols under the cockpit, and by the end of the war their number had grown enough to take up a noticeable part of the side.
