About product

The letter codes 4N and 3R over England

The bomb groups of the Eighth Air Force distinguished their machines by a pair of letters on the fuselage belonging to the squadron and by a single separate letter that identified the particular aircraft within the squadron. The sheet shows this system clearly, because both of its machines belonged to the same group and yet carry different combinations.

The first aircraft is 43-38041 with the marking 4N-L, which during its service moved to another squadron and began to fly under the code H8-L. A change of code with the serial number unchanged is a rewarding thing for a modeler: it lets you build two different appearances of one and the same machine, depending on which period you choose.

The second machine and two names on one nose

The second aircraft, 43-38142, carries the code 3R-P and no fewer than two names on the nose. That was not unusual among crews, especially when several crews took turns on a machine or when a new motif was added beside the old inscription on the other side of the fuselage.

The set is printed and you will not find a kit in it. On this type the most demanding place is the transition between the side of the fuselage and the wing root, through which the large code letter often passes. Settle the film there with warm water and softener and press it down with a soft brush. The year 1945 means a late appearance with dark but already quite worn finishes, so it pays to let the wear show through under the markings and only then even everything out with a light overcoat. On machines from the last months of the war in particular, the upper surfaces above the engine nacelles are stained by exhaust gases, and this detail does more for credibility than the most carefully applied number.

FAQ

According to the reference it moved to another squadron and with it changed its two-letter marking, while the serial number stayed the same. It can therefore be built in both appearances.

There are two serial numbers and they do not repeat. On one model you therefore use one of the markings, or one of the two appearances of the first machine.

It does not; these are only printed markings on a carrier film.

The large code letter that passes over the wing root. Warm water, softener and pressing down with a soft brush in sections all help.
