A sheet of waterslide decals with nine de Havilland Vampire aircraft in RAF service between 1948 and 1950, from Egypt through occupied Germany to Cyprus.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Vampire was the second jet fighter the Royal Air Force took into regular service, and the first that really spread across the whole empire. The sheet captures exactly that moment: the turn of the 1940s and 1950s, when the twin tail booms were as common a sight over Suez as over the Ruhr.
Seven of the nine aircraft on offer are FB.5 fighter-bombers, and the remaining two represent the older pure fighter versions. The serial numbers and the unit code letters are printed separately on the sheet, so you can put each particular machine together exactly as the drawing shows.
A practical note on the work: waterslide decals hold best on a smooth gloss base. Before application, therefore, coat the silver and light gray finishes of the postwar Vampires with a gloss clear, otherwise a matte shadow will appear around the edges under the film. Once dry, all that remains is to even the surface out according to how worn you want the aircraft to look.
The Vampire stayed in service with a number of countries until the end of the 1950s, and its wooden forward fuselage is a technical curiosity to this day. A model with the period markings of a particular squadron therefore tells more than an anonymous silver aircraft with no unit.
