ISU-122, part 1, 1:72 scale (Colibri Decals)

A decal sheet from the Colibri Decals brand in 1:72 scale intended for models of the Soviet ISU-122 heavy self-propelled gun. The package contains the decals alone; the model itself, paints and glue are not part of it. The exact make-up of the sheet and the number of marking variants are given on the packaging.

The real subject

The ISU-122 was a heavy self-propelled gun built on the chassis of the heavy tank of the IS line. The 122 mm weapon was mounted in a fixed fighting superstructure without a rotating turret, which simplified the design and made it possible to carry a powerful barrel on a relatively compact vehicle. Vehicles of this category served from 1944 for destroying fortifications and armored targets at longer range, or for fire support from the second echelon. The turretless arrangement is distinctive for a modeler in that most of the detail is concentrated in the front wall of the superstructure and on the barrel.

Application tips

First varnish the areas the markings are to go onto with a gloss varnish, as silvery patches form under a decal on a matte surface. Cut the motifs out close to the image and soak them briefly in lukewarm water. On the welded seams and rivets use a softener, so that the decal bears down into the relief. Once dry, even the whole model out with a matte varnish and only then apply a wash and dust pigments; otherwise the weathering would damage the decal.
