An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:72 scale from PM Model. The subject is the F-104G, the multirole version of the supersonic Starfighter, which European air forces operated in large numbers. The model has a striking, easily recognizable shape, so it does not get lost in a display case even next to larger types. The number of parts, the contents of the package and the extent of the decal sheet are given on the packaging.
The Starfighter was created as a light supersonic fighter with the emphasis on speed and rate of climb. It is carried by a very thin trapezoidal wing of short span with a sharp leading edge, it has T-tail surfaces and it is powered by a single turbojet with afterburner. The F-104G version was reworked for multirole use, that is, not only for air combat but also for attacks on ground targets and for reconnaissance, with a strengthened structure and added avionics. This version became the most widespread one and served with a number of European air forces and other operators, often in licensed production as well.
The most characteristic part of the model is the thin wing: thin the leading edges down carefully and above all keep the dihedral symmetrical, otherwise the model does not look right when seen from the front. The long slim fuselage usually has a prominent lengthwise seam, so fill it and sand it down after gluing, because every trace shows on a smooth surface. Glue the T-tail surfaces on only after the fuselage has dried and check that the horizontal surface stands level. Before finishing, try whether the model sits back on its tail; hide any weight in the nose before you close it. Glossy and metallic surfaces need a perfectly smooth base, otherwise a metallic finish emphasizes every flaw.
