An injection-molded plastic kit from the Ukrainian maker UM. The subject is an experimental vehicle which carried a turret developed for the heavier M26 Pershing tank with a 90 millimeter gun on the hull of the American M4 Sherman medium tank. According to the maker's information, the package supplements the plastic parts with a resin turret and photo-etched sheet, which in a small scale noticeably raises the level of detail. The kit is supplied unassembled and unpainted.
During 1944 the American army was looking for a way to get a stronger gun to Europe faster than production of a new heavy tank could be brought up to speed. One of the routes tried was to mount a 90 millimeter turret on the proven Sherman hull with VVSS spring suspension. The combination never reached series production, however: priority went to the M26 Pershing itself, and the interim solution became the M36 tank destroyer with the same caliber in an open turret. The vehicle thus remained an experimental machine, which makes it a rewarding and rarely seen subject for a collection.
Nip the small parts off with cutters and clean them up with a scalpel, because in this scale they are easily lost. Wash the mold release off the resin turret before the build and cut the casting block off; it is glued with cyanoacrylate glue. Bend the photo-etched parts over a sharp edge and use as little glue as possible. Finish and paint the running gear before you close the hull up. American olive green looks flat, so bring it to life: lighten the upper surfaces, emphasize the edges with drybrushing and let a dark wash into the recesses. Dust the tracks and the bottom of the hull with pigment. Experimental vehicles were not heavily marked, so go easy on the decals.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
