1:72 MiG-29UB Camouflage Scheme 1

Masking stencils for the camouflage of the MiG-29UB in 1:72 scale

This is neither a kit nor decals but a set of pre-cut self-adhesive masks from the manufacturer Js Work. The stencils follow the shapes of the mottling of one particular camouflage scheme of the two-seat MiG-29UB combat trainer in 1:72 scale. They are stuck onto a model that is already sprayed and make it possible to lay on a further shade of camouflage with a crisp, repeatable transition, with no cutting of masks out of tape and no tracing of the shapes by hand.

Use

First spray the model with the base shade of the camouflage and let the paint cure thoroughly, ideally overnight. Lift the masks carefully off the backing, place them according to the enclosed scheme and press them down, especially at the edges and the transitions between surfaces. Then spray the second shade in thin coats, so that the paint does not seep under the edge of the stencil. Take the masks off while the paint is still fresh, pulling at an acute angle. With schemes that have soft transitions the masks can be lifted on small strips, which yields a blurred edge. Remove any adhesive left after taking them off by wiping lightly with a soft cloth, and only then go on with varnishing and decals.

Why stencils instead of handwork

Cutting masks out of tape by hand is slow with busy camouflage patterns, and the result never comes out the same on two identical models. Pre-cut stencils, by contrast, hold the exact shape of the mottling and the same pattern can be repeated at any time. They save time above all in the small scales, where the mottling is tiny and a cut by hand is hard to control.

Who the set is for

• for modelers who spray camouflage with an airbrush
• for builders of modern jet aircraft in 1:72 scale
• for those who want crisp, exactly repeatable shapes of mottling
• for saving time against cutting masks by hand

The set holds masking stencils only. The model, paints and decals are not included in the package.
