A sheet of water-soaked decals from Kits-World in the small 1:72 scale. It is not a kit but an accessory meant for a model that has already been built and painted. The sheet belongs to the series devoted to Lockheed P-38 Lightning machines deployed in the Pacific and is its second set. The particular aircraft, the units and the number of schemes are given in the instructions enclosed with the sheet.
The Lockheed P-38 Lightning was an American twin-engine fighter with two booms and a central nacelle for the pilot and the armament. The layout gave it great range and concentrated fire along the axis of the machine, with no need for the guns to converge. In the Pacific theater, where flying was done over long distances above water, the reliability of two engines and the range were a substantial asset. During production the machine changed gradually in details of the radiators, the cockpit and the equipment, which is worth bearing in mind when choosing markings.
A small scale puts the emphasis on patience. The decals are small and the film ripples easily, so soak the sheet piece by piece and never leave a decal in the water longer than it takes for it to move on the backing paper. Transfer it with a damp brush, not with tweezers. The surface has to be glossy, otherwise a silvery veil appears, which is all the more conspicuous at this scale. Once it is in place, blot the excess water away with a paper towel laid lightly against it from the side and let the model dry untouched. Only then come the softener and finally the unifying matte coat.
This is a separate decal sheet. The model, paints, varnishes and a softener are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
